Lilian von Trapp’s sophisticated, sustainable jewelry designs are a timeless homage to the women, who surround and inspire her designs. Growing up in Berlin Lilian von Trapp was nourished by the cultural and intellectual life of the city. Her minimalistic, ethical designs are a celebration of every woman's independency. Whitelies sat down for a conversation with Lilian.

What did you want to be growing up?

I always wanted to be different things as a girl. At one point I wanted to be a vet, then changed my mind to doctor. At twelve I fell in love with Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman and wanted to become a hooker, but my mom quickly talked me out of that.

Do you currently live by any life philosophy?

Not so much a philosophy but a mantra. “Trust the process” when I get anxious it helps me remember that there are things you can’t change and that it’s sometimes best to let the universe run its course.

What’s the last dream you can remember?

Standing in a well stomping on grapes, the next moment diving through a window into the ocean like a dolphin. My dreams are mostly crazy.

What does your design stand for?

Independent, strong minded souls.

What’s your biggest inspiration?

The women and friends I spend time with every day.

What role does fashion play in your life?

A big one. I think the misconception many people have about fashion is its alleged superficiality. Yet what we wear and how we wear it is the way we choose to reveal ourselves to the outside world. There is nothing superficial about it. It can be very personal.

Who do you look up to?

I try to imagine myself in 30 years time and look up to that woman. I imagine, what she would do, having experienced it all already. It helps me keep my issues and values in line.

Which talent would you like to have?

To just stay calm.

A question you have never been asked?

What is the point of you?

What’s your plan for the next 24 hours?

I’ll be shipping orders, having dinner with friends, chilling at home with my husband and our dog, working out to get my head clear, meeting customers… right now I’m essentially a one woman show, so I try to make the most of my time.
